Businesses and education providers work together to develop skills of UK workforce

Middlesex University and CBI lead ‘Tackling the skills gap’ information sharing session for businesses.

The Corporate Engagement Team at Middlesex has provided insight for business leaders on how to ensure the UK workforce has the skills it needs, both now and in the future.

The ‘Tackling the skills gaps’ event followed a number of recent CBI surveys where businesses from a range of sectors reported problems recruiting and retaining appropriately skilled staff.

Workforce Survey 2017 reveals four in five businesses hit by rising employment costs

Annual survey conducted by the British Chambers of Commerce in partnership with Middlesex University.

Over 1,400 business people from all regions of the UK have been surveyed to understand the impact of rising employment costs on the business community.

The results have revealed that a number of developments in the sector have increased the cost base of businesses, which could potentially lead to reduced opportunities for investment and wage growth.

Alongside the likes of the Apprenticeship Levy, three quarters (75%) of businesses have also reported an increase in costs as a result of pensions auto-enrolment, with nearly a quarter (23%) indicating a significant increase.

easyJet pilots first to graduate from aviation degree

Group of seven students spread their wings to become pilots with easyJet.

The first group of easyJet pilots on the first BSc (Hons) Professional Aviation Pilot Practice degree supported by an airline have graduated at Middlesex University.

This unique degree course – designed specifically for pilots – was launched in 2013 in a partnership between airline pilot training and simulation organisation L3 Commercial Training Solutions (L3, formerly CTC Aviation), Middlesex University and easyJet.

The seven graduating pilots – Anna McGrady, Steven Hadley, Matthew Archer, George Baker, James Rose, Reece Montagu and Jack Shaw are the very first in the country to graduate on the degree programme and have all started flying professionally for easyJet.
