Two of West London’s brightest young tradespeople are taking their skills to the prestigious WorldSkills national final as part of The Skills Show in Birmingham in November.
Twenty year olds Kamal Thapa and Joe Needham from West London College will be taking their skills to the next level when they take on the best in the nation at WorldSkills UK at the NEC Birmingham in November. Kamal and Joe beat out hundreds of competitors from around the country to qualify for the final and are the only students from London in their respective categories to do so.
Joe (in the picture on the right), an apprentice with Raphael Contraction limited will compete in carpentry, while level four engineering student Kamal will compete in industrial electronics at the competition which brings the best young apprentices and tradespeople from across the UK to compete in a wide range of trades and disciplines from building and bricklaying to 3D animation and fine jewellery making.
Joe is no stranger to the WorldSkills event after receiving a Highly Commended at the national event in Birmingham last year. This year he will be gunning for the top national prize after comfortably winning his carpentry regional heat at Acton Construction and STEM Centre back in May this year.
For Kamal (in the picture below), this will be his first WorldSkills event after he qualified through a heat at Alton College involving C++ programming, printed and breadboard circuit construction, and a written test. In the past two years he has completed level 2 and level 3 in Electronic Engineering at Acton Construction and STEM Centre, and is now starting his first year at Kingston University.

The WorldSkills UK finals will take place at The Skill Show, the nation’s largest skills, apprenticeships and careers event, taking place from, 16-18 November 2017.
West London College are still enrolling throughout the week of 11 September 2017 as part of New Start Week – a special week to make sure students are on exactly the right course for them.
