The Graduate School would like to hear from organisations who would like to host a PhD student, or for students who would like to take up an Innovation Placement. An Innovation Placement is a micro-placement of minimum two and maximum four weeks duration. The placement will enable doctoral students to engage with projects that allow them to demonstrate impact from their research and develop skills, competencies and experience to work effectively and collaboratively with businesses to find solutions that address business and societal challenges.
PLACEMENT PROJECT AREAS
To be eligible for funding the Innovation Placement must be explicitly within the scope of the UK’s Industrial Strategy’s 4 Grand Challenges: i) AI and the data economy; ii) clean growth; iii) the future of mobility and iv) ageing society and the core industrial areas aligned to them.
This could include a range of activities relevant to the Industrial Strategy:
- entrepreneurial training/placements
- relevant placements with industry
- relevant placements with policy organisations
- exploratory small projects/placements with SMEs
- summer schools and conference placements relevant to Industrial Strategy challenges
- other placements to support and increase the impact arising from doctoral research
STUDENT ELIGIBLITY
To be eligible to claim financial support during the Innovation Placement funding is available for existing Imperial College EPSRC-funded students working in areas of relevance to the industrial strategy. Therefore, the placement must be related to the student’s PhD research to undertake the placement during a period of external study leave.
COMPANY ELIGIBILITY
To be eligible to claim an industry grant, equivalent to an EPSRC student bursary and worth up to £1400 for a 4-week placement, your business must meet the EU definition of an SME and operate within the sectors or areas relevant to the Industrial Strategy.
