A woman’s perspective on clay pigeon shooting
–  Charlotte Denny

As both a novice and a lady I was incredibly nervous about coming on my first clay pigeon shoot. Not only was I petrified at the thought of holding a gun, I also couldn’t shake the feeling that I was going to humiliate myself in front of my colleagues.
I could barely stomach the steaming cup of coffee and bacon roll offered up by Holland & Holland upon my arrival, and the competitive banter of my co-workers did nothing to quell my fears. Having been briefed and handed safety equipment we were introduced to our instructors, and that’s where my apprehension for the day ended.

After listening patiently to my concerns and nerves, our instructor assured me that he would take good care of us. The only woman in my team, he measured me up for a gun that would fit me comfortably. The one I was handed was much lighter than I expected and I was relieved to hear it would leave my shoulder unharmed and with all feeling; I was to shoot a 28 bore, two calibres smaller than my male counterparts.

Out on the grounds it only took me one shot to feel completely at ease. It turns out- much to my team’s dismay that I am quite a good shot. Knowing I wasn’t a shoe in for the ‘clay conservation’ prize had me confident and I found myself joining in (perhaps too enthusiastically) with the trash talk!.

I came away from our experience at Holland & Holland with a new hobby and my pride intact. Although I missed out on the top prizes, I beat many of the blokes in the group and definitely won bragging rights in the office.
The thought of joining a shooting event is intimidating for anyone- man or woman- but the level of expertise offered at Holland & Holland means that no matter what experience you have (or don’t have) there’s really nothing to worry about.
If I can do it anyone can!
Clays, black powder and large calibre rifles.
